Family Day is the moment you've been counting down to — the first time you'll see your Soldier since they shipped. It's usually held the Wednesday before graduation. This is your complete guide to the day: what it is, how it flows, when to arrive, and what to bring.
What Is Family Day?
Family Day is a long-standing Army tradition marking the end of Basic Combat Training. It's your first chance to reunite with your Soldier after the training cycle. At Fort Jackson — the Army's largest Basic Combat Training installation — Family Day is typically held the day before the formal graduation ceremony on Hilton Field. Families gather, watch a brief ceremony, and are then released with their Soldier for the day, either on post or (with the right pass) off post for a real meal together.
Family Day vs. Graduation
These are two separate events on two different days. Family Day (usually Wednesday) is the informal reunion and pass day. Graduation (usually Thursday) is the formal ceremony on Hilton Field where the cycle officially ends. Most families attend both — see the graduation schedule for the ceremony itself.
How the Day Works
The morning typically begins with a short ceremony around 9:00 a.m. (about an hour), after which Soldiers are released to their families on an on-post pass for the rest of the day. You'll be able to take photos, walk parts of the post, and spend time together before Soldiers return in the evening.
